Known for its take on the classics, Extant Arts turns the focus of its 2010 season from the dramas of Shakespeare and the Greeks to the more intimate, but no less powerful, struggles of working people. Reflecting on the Great Recession and its impact, Extant explores a world where laughter and tragedy are experienced on an everyday scale: in the loss of a job, the excitement of a new flirtation, the frustration of a failed dream.
Extant opens the season with Blue Surge, a melancholy romance by acclaimed contemporary playwright, Rebecca Gilman. The play confronts the American taboo of class through the eyes of a small-town cop who struggles to "save" a young hooker.
